This second generation offers a significant improvement over the previous model thanks to a new optical design consisting of 14 elements in 11 groups, including 2 XA (extreme aspherical) and 2 ED (Extra-low Dispersion) elements, optimized to reduce aberrations and maximize sharpness and microcontrast.
The wide f/1.4 aperture uses an 11-blade circular diaphragm, ensuring smooth and consistent bokeh, free of onion rings and with natural transitions from focus to blur. The minimum focusing distance is 0.85 m in AF and 0.80 m in MF, with a maximum magnification ratio of 0.11x (AF) and 0.12x (MF). The front diameter supports standard 77 mm filters, making it ideal for mounting on existing professional systems.
The new dual XD Linear Motor AF system enables extremely fast, silent, and precise focusing, perfectly integrated with the Real-Time Eye AF of Sony α-series mirrorless cameras. Additionally, focus breathing control and in-camera compensation support make the FE 85 II a high-performance solution for video as well. For those working in Super 35/APS-C mode, the equivalent focal length is 127.5 mm—ideal for compressed close-ups and cinematic portraits.
With a lightweight design of 642 g and compact dimensions (Ø84.7 x 107.3 mm), this lens is built to offer maximum mobility without optical compromises. Fully sealed against dust and moisture, with a fluorine coating on the front element, it’s also suitable for challenging environmental conditions.
